How to quickly and accurately compare shades?

In anterior restorations, accurate shades are very important whether we are using ceramic powders or digital materials such as zirconium block and lithium disilicate ceramics. Although there are many different types of digital colorimeters, the traditional visual confirmation link is still the most basic and important, and irreplaceable. Using the rule of thirds color comparison technique, combined with the correct use of the dental shade guide, can make the porcelain teeth and natural teeth have a very high matching degree so that the majority of doctors and patients can rest assured.

1. Colorimetric knowledge

Three elements of color:

Value: Refers to the lightness and darkness of a color, also known as depth, and is the basis for expressing a sense of color hierarchy.

Chroma: The degree of turbidity (degree of saturation) of the color.

Hue: Exactly expresses the color of a certain color.

2. color comparison requirements

  • Try to compare colors under sunlight or standard fluorescent lamps, not under common operating lights.
  • The surrounding environment should try to avoid all bright colors. If necessary, ask the patient to wipe off lip gloss, etc., and cover bright-colored clothing with a gray cloth.
  • Make a choice quickly, and trust the first choice, because the eye fatigues in 5-7 seconds for color, and the information that may be obtained is not the main information.

3. How to use 3D (26 colors) shades guide

Step 1: Brightness

First, use the top row of tooth color chips (1M1, 2M1, 3M1, 4M1, 5M1) on the shade guide to select the brightness. You only need to use these color chips to make a simple selection according to the corresponding tooth color.

Step 2: Chroma

The second step uses the same principle as the first step, using the color chips to compare and select the saturation of the tooth color quickly.

Step 3: Hue

Finally, determine whether the natural tooth is more yellowish (L) or redder (R) than the standard shade.

Through the above three steps, the tooth shades can be compared quickly and accurately.
